San Fernando High School seniors Karimar Trujillo, Montserrat Ramos-Lopez, and Fabiola Martinez, participants of the DIY Girls Invent Girls program, have won the Congressional App Challenge.
The girls submitted a revamped version of their 2021-22 Invent Girls project, which they titled Admonere, an app that leads a user through efficient study sessions by organizing assignments by difficulty, deadlines, and subject, all while using the Pomodoro technique. The app will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building, featured on the House of Representatives website for one year, and recognized in the #HouseofCode national reception.
Earlier this week, the girls met Congressman Tony Cardenas to receive their award and had an inspirational conversation with the Congressman, where he reminded the girls that they can achieve anything. When asked by Karimar what advice he had for them since they will be going off to college soon, he shared, “It doesn’t matter your gender, it doesn’t matter the color of your skin, it doesn’t matter if your parents did or did not go to college. When you are in that classroom, it’s all about you.”
After high school, Karimar will be pursuing a Computer Engineering degree, Montserrat will be majoring in Computer Science, and Fabiola is looking into studying Computer Science or Software Engineering.
When asked about the impact DIY Girls had on their trajectory, Monsteratt shared, “I love the relationships that I made in the program, the fun projects, and getting to explore the STEM Field in different ways.”
