Nonprofit EnCorps Seeks STEM Tutors

Redondo Beach, Calif.-based nonprofit EnCorps is seeking tutors for its STEMx Tutors Program.

The program, which was launched in response to the COVID-19 learning loss for students of color in under-resourced schools, aims to help “ignite a love of math that will give them equitable opportunities to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM),” according to EnCorps.

Volunteers can tutor math either virtually with two, one-hour, one-on-one tutoring sessions online each week, or via a hybrid model, with in-person sessions with two students to each tutor.

The commitment is for one semester.

Potential tutors must live and be able to legally work in the U.S., and meet one of the following criteria: have a bachelor’s degree and at least one year of hands-on STEM industry work experience; be a junior or senior in college in an accredited STEM program with a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher; hold a professional certificate in a STEM field with at least one year of hands-on STEM work; or are a current or former credentialed math teacher.

“The STEMx Tutors Program aims to increase math proficiency and to increase middle school students’ confidence in math by offering online tutoring by a STEM expert,” EnCorps states. “As a STEM Professional or college student you have the opportunity to share your passion for math with middle school students who may not have equitable access to a high-quality STEM education.”
